Freya Mathews, Ph.D.

Freya Mathews was born and raised in Australia, but studied philosophy, at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, at the University of London in the 1970s (her doctorate was on the metaphysics of possibility and necessity). She has been teaching philosophy in Australian universities since 1979. She is currently in the Philosophy Program at La Trobe University where she teaches ecological philosophy, co-ordinates the Environmental Enquiry major, and co-edits the journal, PAN (Philosophy Activism Nature). Her research interests include not only ecological philosophy but philosophy of place, indigenous philosophy and Taoism. Her books include: The Ecological Self (1991); For Love of Matter (2003); Journey to the Source of the Merri (2003); Reinhabiting Reality: Towards a Recovery of Culture (2005).
